“Welcome to First UMC McKeesport - a dynamic and friendly church committed to expressing God’s Love through our words and deeds.  Our highest priority is to welcome and respond to God’s presence, to communicate God’s good news effectively, to impact our city and the world, and to develop outstanding leaders. It is my desire that our music, preaching, and teaching are done in such a way that genuinely speaks to the needs of all people.   The heart of my message is ‘the deeper spiritual life message,’ which can be defined as increased intimacy and sensitivity to God through an on-going relationship with God through the power of the Holy Spirit.  I believe that one’s highest call is to be a ‘Friend of God’ and a carrier of the presence of the Holy Spirit.  It is here that real transformation occurs. Together with the First United Methodist body of Christ, we welcome you to our church.“

HISTORY

First United Methodist Church of McKeesport has served the McKeesport area continuously for over 172 years.

Methodist circuit riders began their preaching ministry in the “Valley of the Ohio ” in 1784.  These men preached the gospel in cabins and barns near the site of McKeesport .  The first church building in McKeesport was erected in 1819 on lots donated by John McKee at Market and Sixth Streets and was used by Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists.

The first Methodist class was formed in McKeesport in 1834.  The Miller Methodist Episcopal Church organized the Methodist church at “McKee’s Port” in 1840 and in 1841 it was recognized by the Pittsburgh Conference.

In 1843 a house of worship was built on the lot adjoining the corners of Market Street and Fifth Avenue .  The congregation required a larger building, which was erected in 1846.  The third church was built in 1876 on property at the corner of Walnut Street and Penny Avenue .  On July 11, 1924 , this building was completely destroyed by fire.  Until a new church could be erected, church meetings were held in the Y.M.C.A., the German Evangelical Church , and St. Johns Lutheran Church .

Plans were set, and our present church was built on Cornell Street between Versailles Avenue and Spring Street.  The cornerstone was laid on October 5, 1925 , with the first service held on September 12, 1926 .  The building was dedicated on November 21, 1926 .
